District Khushab

District Khushab is an important district of the Punjab. It is situated on the west bank of the Jhelum River. Name of the Khushab has been derived from two Persian words “Khush” and “Aab” which refer to sweet and refreshing water of the River Jhelum. Due to its terrain and topography it has distinctive position in the province. It has beautiful mountains, valleys, waterfalls, plains, deserts, rich mineral resources and river. Soon valley is rich in wildlife like Hawks, Chinkara, Punjab Urial, Chokor and water Fowl Ducks etc. Thal desert is famous for the cultivation of gram. Archeological remains are also found in the district at Amb Sharif and Soon valley. It has strategic importance because of Pakistan Airforce Air Base and RADAR Station at Sakessar and strategic installation at Girote and Sodhi Jaywali.

During the British rule Khushab was the headquarters of Shahpur District of the Punjab. During that time cotton, wool, and ghee were exported to Multan and Sakkar. Cotton clothes were exported to Afghanistan.

District Headquarters is at Jauharabad which was laid on 13th February, 1951 on the name of Moulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar.
